Background

The Erin Wastewater System Sewage Pumping Station (SPS) project was developed as part of the Town of Erin’s new wastewater collection system, extending municipal wastewater services to the communities of Hillsburgh and Erin Village. The project involved the construction of a new sewage pumping station together with its associated mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, and control infrastructure to support reliable wastewater conveyance and future community growth.

Valley Integration was selected as the approved System Integrator to deliver the complete instrumentation, control panel, PLC programming, SCADA integration, and commissioning services, providing a robust automation platform for efficient and dependable pumping station operation.

Requirement

The project required a fully integrated automation and control system capable of supporting continuous sewage pumping operations while providing operators with complete process visibility and reliable equipment control. The solution needed to provide:

  • Centralized PLC-based automation for pumping station operations.
  • Plant-wide SCADA monitoring and supervisory control.
  • Local operator interface for equipment monitoring and diagnostics.
  • Integration of process instrumentation for accurate operational monitoring.
  • Process Control Narrative (PCN) development to establish standardized control philosophy.
  • Comprehensive testing, commissioning, documentation, and operator training to ensure long-term operational reliability.
Project Scope

Valley Integration was responsible for delivering the complete instrumentation and automation package, including the following:

  • Supply, installation, testing, and commissioning (SITC) of new PLC and communication panels.
  • Supply and integration of process instrumentation, including flowmeters, pressure transmitters, temperature sensors, level instruments, and smoke detection systems.
  • Development of the Process Control Narrative (PCN).
  • PLC programming, HMI development, and GE iFIX Professional SCADA programming.
  • System integration, Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), commissioning, engineering documentation, and operator training for Remote Processing Units (RPUs) and PLC systems.

  • Advanced Pumping Station Automation: Engineered and programmed the Rockwell ControlLogix PLC platform to deliver reliable automation and control of critical sewage pumping operations.
  • Industrial SCADA Development: Developed a GE iFIX Professional SCADA application for centralized process visualization, real-time monitoring, alarm management, and supervisory control.
  • Operator Interface Engineering: Configured FactoryTalk View ME operator interfaces to provide intuitive local monitoring, diagnostics, and equipment control.
  • Process Control Narrative (PCN) Development: Developed a comprehensive Process Control Narrative to define control sequences, operational logic, alarm philosophy, and system functionality throughout the facility.
  • Comprehensive Process Instrumentation: Supplied and integrated instrumentation in accordance with the approved instrument list, including flowmeters, pressure transmitters, temperature sensors, level instruments, and smoke detection systems for accurate process monitoring and operational safety.
  • Standardized SCADA Engineering: Implemented Valley Integration’s Standard SCADA Development Framework, ensuring consistent software architecture, simplified maintenance, and scalability for future system expansion.
  • Testing & Commissioning: Successfully completed Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), system integration, commissioning, documentation, and operator training to ensure reliable long-term operation.
