City of Hamilton – Garner Road (HD018) Water Pumping Station Upgrades

City of Hamilton – Garner Road (HD018) Water Pumping Station Upgrades

City of Hamilton – Garner Road (HD018) Water Pumping Station Upgrades

Background

The Garner Road (HD018) Water Pumping Station Upgrades project was undertaken by the City of Hamilton to increase the capacity, reliability, and operational efficiency of an existing municipal water pumping station. The upgrade included the replacement of aging pumping equipment, installation of a new bypass system, modernization of process instrumentation, and enhancements to the station’s electrical and control infrastructure.

Valley Integration was selected to provide the instrumentation, control panels, PLC integration, and commissioning services, delivering an automation solution that complies with the City of Hamilton’s engineering standards while supporting reliable and efficient water distribution operations.

Requirement

The pumping station modernization required a robust automation and instrumentation solution capable of supporting increased pumping capacity while maintaining reliable process monitoring and operational control. The system needed to provide the following:

  • Advanced PLC-based automation for pumping station operations.
  • Local operator interface for equipment monitoring and control.
  • Accurate process instrumentation for flow, pressure, chlorine, ammonia, and level measurement.
  • New and upgraded control panels integrated with the existing pumping station infrastructure.
  • Complete testing, commissioning, and documentation in accordance with City of Hamilton standards.
Project Scope

Valley Integration was responsible for delivering the instrumentation and automation scope of the project, including:

  • Supply, testing, and commissioning of Local Control Panels (LCP) and Programmable Automation Controller (PAC) panels.
  • Modification of the existing PAC panel to support upgraded pumping equipment.
  • Supply and integration of process instrumentation, including flowmeters, pressure transmitters, chlorine analyzers, ammonia analyzers, and level instruments.
  • Development and integration of the instrumentation system for real-time monitoring and control of critical process parameters.
  • System testing, commissioning, and documentation to ensure reliable operation and compliance with project specifications.
Technical Highlights
  • Advanced Pumping Station Automation: Engineered and integrated a Rockwell ControlLogix PLC platform to provide reliable control of upgraded pumping equipment and associated process systems.
  • Industrial Operator Interface: Developed and configured QuickPanel+ Operator Interface Terminals (OIT) to enable intuitive local monitoring, diagnostics, and operational control.
  • Comprehensive Process Instrumentation: Supplied and integrated instrumentation in accordance with the approved instrument list, including flowmeters, pressure transmitters, chlorine analyzers, ammonia analyzers, and level instruments for accurate real-time process measurement.
  • Control Panel Engineering: Supplied, tested, commissioned, and integrated new Local Control Panels (LCP) and PAC panels while modifying the existing PAC panel to support the upgraded pumping station configuration.
  • Municipal Infrastructure Modernization: Successfully executed a complex retrofit within an operational water pumping station, ensuring seamless integration of new automation systems with existing infrastructure.
  • Testing & Commissioning: Completed comprehensive system testing, commissioning, and engineering documentation to ensure dependable performance, regulatory compliance, and long-term maintainability.
